FAQs for CAP Round 1
1. How many of the seats are available for Mumbai students in Round I ?
Ans: CAP Round will fill both the type of seats: Maharashtra State Seats (on the basis of State Level Merit List No. SLMLN which will be prepared on the basis of 50% Std XII PCM + 50% JEE Main) and All India Seats (on the basis of All India Merit List No. – AIMLN, which will be prepared on the basis of CBSE Merit List i.e. Percentile weightage to 60% JEE Main + 40% Std. XII Boards). Thus a Mumbai Student will be able to apply for the following seats through Round I:
- 100% of the Seats in Autonomus (Govt. / Govt aided Colleges), SNDT&BATU offered through CAP(allotted on the basis of Maharashtra State Rank) and 70% seats from ICT.
- 70% of the CAP seats in Colleges under Mumbai University area (Home University) that are offered through CAP (allotted on the basis of State Rank).
- 30% of the CAP seats in Colleges OUTSIDE Mumbai University area (Outside Home University) that offered through CAP (allotted on the basis of Maharashtra State Rank).
- 15% of the seats in all the Un-aided Colleges in entire Maharashtra that are offered through CAP (on the basis of AIMLN) and 30% seats from ICT under All India seats.
2. How can I apply for these Centralised Rounds?
Ans: To apply for the CENTRALISED ROUND I for admission to any Engineering college in Maharashtra (Govt. University Managed, Govt. Aided or Private) for Maharashtra State seats and / or All India seats, you have to fill ONLY ONE (SINGLE) ONLINE OPTION (CHOICE) FORM.This application form (including the option form) has to be submitted online at: www.dtemaharashtra.gov.in/fe2015
3. Filling up of online Option Form for allotment through Round I (Most Important)
Ans: After assessing your merit position, you should enter your preferences (Institute Course Combinations*) in the “Option form” and submit it online.
Note: Once the option form is confirmed, you will NOT be able to make any further changes to the option form i.e. now the options are locked. Only students who fill in their preferences and submit the form will be considered in this Round I.
* Institute – Course combination Choice Codes are printed along with the information of each college, in the Institute Information Brochure printed by DTE.
From this list, you can select ANY COLLEGE in Maharashtra i.e. you need not confine your choices to colleges under Mumbai University area alone, as you are also eligible for seats outside Mumbai University area (30% of the State seats as well as 15% of All India Seats). MOCK ALLOTMENT” is not the provisional allotment & after “MOCK allotment” student should not go to allotted college for confirmation.
4. How do I write the 100 choices in the Option form?
Ans: In the section provided, a student can write a maximum of 100 choices. (It is not compulsory that all the 100 choices be written. The student MAY write only one choice, or only two choices and so on, upto a maximum of 100 choices).
However, while writing the choices the Student should mention his choices as per his order of priority i.e. his first preferred choice written FIRST, then his SECOND preferred choice, then his THIRD preferred choice and so on.
5. How does the system allot courses to students in Round I?
Ans: While preparing the All Maharashtra allocation list for Round I, the computer will first check if the student has entered his preferred choices. If no choice has been entered, that student will NOT be considered for Round I.
If his choices are mentioned, the computer will check whether the student’s FIRST choice can be made available to him (as per his SLMLN merit or AIMLN). If it is available, he will be offered that seat (without even checking the second option).
If his FIRST choice is NOT available, then the computer will CHECK whether his SECOND choice is available if it is available, his second choice will be offered to him. And so on.
This process will continue until the student secures a seat in one of his choices (on the basis of his SLMLN or AlMLN ) or until all the choices mentioned by the student are exhausted.
The allotment list is generated at the of end of this process and will be displayed on the website www.dtemaharashtra.gov.in/fe2015 on the date specified as per schedule. This list will provide the “name of the student” along with the “nature of the offer”.
Significance of the “NATURE OF OFFER”
On the day specified in the schedule, the allocation list will be displayed. Against each name, the “Nature of offer” will be mentioned, i.e. either “ALLOTTED” or “NOT ALLOTTED”.
- ALLOTTED:
Out of the choice(s) mentioned (in the form) by the student, one is available to the student. The choice (i.e. Institute – Course Combination ) which is ALLOTTED to the student will be printed in the allocation list besides his / her name.
In case an “ALLOTTED ” offer is made to the student, it is presumed that the student (or his / her representative with an authority letter from the student)
- Reports to the concerned college where he has got admission with all the original certificates before the specified date (e.g. a student who has got into say, Thadomal, Bandra will have to go to Thadomal, Bandra and a student who has got into say, MIT, Pune will have to go to MIT, Pune).
- Accepts the course offered to him.
- Pays the college fees and submits the original certificates and confirms the admission.

NOTE:All Students who have appeared for JEE-Main and have a composite positive score MUST apply for State Seats as well as All India Seats (i.e. even if, “Not eligible for central counseling” is printed on your JEE-Main score card, you ARE eligible for all relevant CAP Rounds.(All India Seats Round will be held as per CBSE JEE-Main All India Rank and not JEE-Main State Rank.)
FAQs for College + Course Selections
1. What is Composite Score?
Ans: 50% weightage shall be given to the percentile of marks obtained in JEE (Main) 2015 – Paper 1 and 50% weightage shall be given to the percentile of marks obtained in the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in the Std. XII Board examination added together.
For Maharashtra State candidate passing HSC from Maharashtra State Board or CBSE or ICSE, Percentile shall be calculated separately for their respective boards on the basis of March 2015 examination. If the candidate has passed HSC from any Board other than Maharashtra State Board, CBSE and ICSE, then such candidate shall be assigned equivalent Board Percentile of Maharashtra State Boards candidate scoring equal number of marks in the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics added together for March 2015 examination.
For Maharashtra State candidate from Maharashtra State Board, CBSE and ICSE result of March 2015 of the respective board shall be considered for the purpose of total number of students appeared for the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in the respective board. of students appeared for the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in the respective board.
2. What certificates are required during admission?
Ans: For majority of the students only the following certificates are required:
- Std. XII mark sheet
- Std. XII college leaving certificate
- Std. X mark sheet
- Indian Nationality Certificate (ie Passport or College Leaving Certificate if it mentions nationality)
- Domicile Certificate
- Type A Candidate : Domicile Certificate / Birth Certificate of Candidate
- Type B Candidate : Domicile Certificate of Candidate / Father / Mother
- Proforma ‘I’ (undertaking)
The following certificates are required only for specific cases as applicable:
- Caste Certificate : Caste Validity certificate; Non-creamy layer
- Domicile (of Father / Mother and not of the student)
3. Who needs a Domicile certificate?
Ans: This certificate is required only by Type A candidates whose Birth Certificate / Leaving Certificate does not mention the place of birth.
4. What are the parameters for grading of colleges?
Ans: The Govt. of Maharashtra has graded colleges on a scale of A to E, based on various significant parameters such as Teaching Faculty, Computer facilities & other Lab infrastructure, Library, Placements, cleanliness of the campus, etc. Last done in 2005 by the Govt. of Maharashtra, the Grade is a useful tool in selecting colleges.
5. What factors should I consider while selecting colleges?
Ans: There are several factors to be considered while selecting colleges. To list these are:
- Teaching Quality
- Distance and convenience of commuting: Choose colleges that are easy to reach and not very far off
- Fees:Each college has its own structure of fees, please check these during your selection process. The fees are fixed by Shikshan Shulk Samiti on the basis of the college infrastructure
- Grade of college
6. During the selection process, what is more important: Branch or College?
Ans: First select your branch, as that will determine your career in the long run. Then if you are getting your preferred branch or one that is close to it in various colleges, choose the better college.
7. How much difference is actually there in the following branches: IT, CMPN, etc.?
Ans: INFT, CMPN, ETRX, EXTC are similar branches, though there is a false perception among students that ERTX is only hardware, while INFT essentially is software based.
8. Can I change my college / stream in the second year?
Ans: This is not easily done, so don’t plan your selections in the hope of revising it in the second year.
9. Will last year’s cut-offs be relevant this year?
Ans: In 2014, cut-offs were calculated based on JEE-Main and Std. XII results. The format is the same this year, so you may use the 2014 cut-offs for reference.
10. What is an ‘option’?
Ans: When you fill out your admission form issued by DTe, you are expected to indicate the options of your choice. An option is an indication of your choice for a particular ‘Course’ in a particular ‘College’ in a given ‘University’. An option is expressed as a unique combination of 9 digit code, where the 1st digit refers to region, 2nd, 3rd and 4th digits combined refer to College; 5th, 6th and 7th digits together refers to the Course and 8th digit refers to shift (1 for 1st shift, 2 for 2nd shift); 9th digit refers to tuition fee waiver scheme seat (0 is General Seat, 1 is TFWS seat). The code numbers for courses in each institute are mentioned in the institute information brochure provided by DTe.
11. How do I choose my options?
Ans: This is most important part of filling out your admission form. Here is what you need to do:
- Prepare a list of branches you wish to pursue in order of priority.
- For each branch, make a list of colleges that your are interested in. You may want to include colleges from other University areas.
- Arrange the list as per your priority.
- College 1 – Course 2
- College 2 – Course 2
- College 1 – Course 5
- College 7 – Course 2, etc.
- Fill in the required number of top choices as per your preference.
12. Can I select different courses from a given college?
Ans: Yes. When you fill in an option, you are choosing a ‘college-course’ combination. Your Option List may contain same course from different colleges, different courses from the same college and / or a mix of both.
13. Can I apply to an University outside of my area?
Ans: Yes, you can apply to any college in Maharashtra, in addition to colleges under the University of Mumbai.
14. Is it advisable to study in colleges outside Mumbai?
Ans: When you select your college, you must remember that your 4 years of engineering study are an important part of your life. These years form the foundation for your career, your friends and will influence your future in a big way. If you can stay with your family, you will always have family support and guidance during these exciting and sometimes stressful years of growing up. It would also make sense for you to check out the colleges outside in person, prior to considering them for admissions.
15. Can my options be changed after submitting the option form?
Ans: You are allowed to revise your option list till you confirm. The system considers the latest version for allotment purposes.
16. How many allotments are given per student?
Ans: Each student is either given ‘one’ allotment or ‘NO’ allotment. More than one allotment is not given.
17. Assuming I have been unable to get any of the options I submitted, will the system offer me a seat as per merit?
Ans: No, the computer will not do this. The scope of the computer search is limited to your Options List. The computer will not go beyond this List to offer you something that is not on your list. If none of your chosen options are possible, then it will print ‘Not Allotted’ against your name. Therefore it is important to think out your options and write them carefully.
18. If an option is allotted to me, do I have to accept it?
Ans: The rules for allotment and acceptance of the same at the various rounds have been given in detail in the CAP process. Kindly refer to the same. If you wish to accept the allotment, you must report to the respective institute and complete the admission formalities.
Note:When you Accept an allotment, you become ineligible for all the subsequent CAP rounds. Not accepting the allotment, when you are supposed to, will also lead to disqualification in the following CAP rounds.
19. Can I choose different options in the second and third CAP rounds?
Ans: Yes, you can. The options of the previous round have no bearing on the current round.
Quota Seats
Admission Process By Individual Colleges For The ‘Institute Level Quota Seats’
1. Which seats will be filled in this process?
Ans: Upto 20% seats in private colleges (minority and non-minority) are filled by the respective colleges by conducting a round in their campus i.e. such rounds are conducted by each college independently.
2. How can I apply to ALL such seats in various colleges?
Ans: The student will have to fill up admission forms of the respective colleges separately for all the institutes they would like to apply for.
Common Problems faced by student during such Rounds:
- Such Rounds are conducted by each college separately.Hence the student WILL HAVE TO personally keep a track of the schedules of such Rounds in various colleges of his/her interest.
- Those applying at various colleges will also have to arrange for extra amount to be paid as fees. A common situation students find themselves in: Let us assume you have already secured a seat in some college (say A) through its Institute level admission round, and now also want to apply to some other college (say B) for its Institute level seat. In such cases, you will first have to pay full fees in college B and only then, you will be able to apply for the refund from the first college.
- Steps to follow during the entire FE admission process
Since the FE admission process is NOT completely centralised, students should do the following:
- Apply through the centralised process (RoundI, ll & Ill) Decide on the options of ‘Institute course combinations’ to be filled in the option form of every round VERY CAREFULLY since the elimination rules are quite strict.
- Contact the Private colleges of your interest and get their Admission forms (including Minority, if eligible) you may (be) have shortlisted (for their Institute Level Quota Round).
- Keep a track of the schedules of Institute Level Quota Round in these selected colleges.
- Keep additional sets of “Attested Documents” ready.
- Keep extra money ready for payment of fees, as you may be required to pay fees in more than one college during Institute Level Rounds (You should be able to claim for a Refund later).

If none of your chosen options are possible, then it will print ‘Not Allotted’ against your name. Therefore it is important to think out your options and write them carefully.
18. If an option is allotted to me, do I have to accept it?
Ans: The rules for allotment and acceptance of the same at the various rounds have been given in detail in the CAP process. Kindly refer to the same. If you wish to accept the allotment, you must report to the respective institute and complete the admission formalities.
Note:When you Accept an allotment, you become ineligible for all the subsequent CAP rounds. Not accepting the allotment, when you are supposed to, will also lead to disqualification in the following CAP rounds.
19. Can I choose different options in the second and third CAP rounds?
Ans: Yes, you can. The options of the previous round have no bearing on the current round.
Quota Seats
Admission Process By Individual Colleges For The ‘Institute Level Quota Seats’
1. Which seats will be filled in this process?
Ans: Upto 20% seats in private colleges (minority and non-minority) are filled by the respective colleges by conducting a round in their campus i.e. such rounds are conducted by each college independently.
2. How can I apply to ALL such seats in various colleges?
Ans: The student will have to fill up admission forms of the respective colleges separately for all the institutes they would like to apply for.
Common Problems faced by student during such Rounds:
- Such Rounds are conducted by each college separately.Hence the student WILL HAVE TO personally keep a track of the schedules of such Rounds in various colleges of his/her interest.
- Those applying at various colleges will also have to arrange for extra amount to be paid as fees. A common situation students find themselves in: Let us assume you have already secured a seat in some college (say A) through its Institute level admission round, and now also want to apply to some other college (say B) for its Institute level seat. In such cases, you will first have to pay full fees in college B and only then, you will be able to apply for the refund from the first college.
- Steps to follow during the entire FE admission process
Since the FE admission process is NOT completely centralised, students should do the following:
- Apply through the centralised process (RoundI, ll & Ill) Decide on the options of ‘Institute course combinations’ to be filled in the option form of every round VERY CAREFULLY since the elimination rules are quite strict.
- Contact the Private colleges of your interest and get their Admission forms (including Minority, if eligible) you may (be) have shortlisted (for their Institute Level Quota Round).
- Keep a track of the schedules of Institute Level Quota Round in these selected colleges.
- Keep additional sets of “Attested Documents” ready.
- Keep extra money ready for payment of fees, as you may be required to pay fees in more than one college during Institute Level Rounds (You should be able to claim for a Refund later).
